Quick answer
Guilin and Yangshuo offer the iconic Chinese karst landscape — limestone peaks rising from flat plains along the Li River, depicted on the 20 RMB banknote and in centuries of Chinese shan shui (mountain-water) painting. The classic experience is the 4-5 hour Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, followed by countryside cycling and bamboo rafting around Yangshuo.
Stay in YANGSHUO, not Guilin city. Yangshuo is the base for the Li River cruise endpoint, Yulong River rafting, cycling, West Street, and the traveler scene. Guilin city is mainly a transit hub. Stay 1 night in Guilin only if you arrive late or have an early cruise departure.
CRITICAL: Yangshuo Station (HSR) is ~30 km from Yangshuo town/West Street. Plan for a 40-60 minute shuttle bus or taxi ride into town.
Booking warnings
- Li River cruise: Foreign passport online booking is UNVERIFIED. The official site liriver.com.cn and WeChat booking flow primarily serve Chinese ID. Book via hotel concierge, authorized travel agency, Trip.com, or purchase at the pier ticket office with passport. Cruises may be suspended during heavy rain/flooding (April-June). 3-star boats from Mopanshan Pier; 4-star from Zhujiang Pier — verify departure point. Approximately ¥215-360+ depending on boat class (verify current prices; rates change seasonally).
- Yulong River bamboo rafting: Foreign passport online booking UNVERIFIED. Book via hotel/agency. Tickets for next day reportedly released at 20:00 the night before. Age/height/weight restrictions apply. Rafting suspended during high water/heavy rain. ¥160-255 per person depending on section.
- Impression Sanjie Liu: Official site status may vary; book via WeChat, OTAs, or hotel/agency. Foreign passport booking UNVERIFIED. Shows cancelled in heavy rain.
- Yangshuo Station is 30km from West Street: Plan shuttle bus or taxi.
- Multiple railway stations in Guilin: Guilin Station (central), Guilin West (HSR hub), Guilin North. Verify which station your train uses.
Best Areas to Stay
- Yangshuo town (West Street area): STAY HERE. West Street (西街) is the pedestrianized main street with restaurants, bars, and shops. The riverside area is quieter. Most hotels, cafes, and tour services are here.
- Yangshuo countryside: Boutique hotels and retreats among karst peaks outside town (near Yulong River or Ten-Mile Gallery). Very peaceful but require a scooter/taxi to reach town.
- Guilin city: Only stay here if arriving late or catching an early flight/train. Guilin is a transit hub, not a destination itself. It is 1.5hrs from Yangshuo.
- Avoid: Staying in Guilin city for the whole trip — you will spend 3+ hours a day commuting to Yangshuo.
Arrival & Transport
- Airport KWL (Guilin Liangjiang): ~45min to Guilin city; ~1.5hrs to Yangshuo by taxi/bus.
- Guilin Station / Guilin North / Guilin West: HSR connections from Guangzhou (~2.5hrs), Guiyang (~2.5hrs), Changsha (~3.5hrs).
- Yangshuo Station: HSR stop,
30min from Guilin but 30km from Yangshuo town. Bus (¥20) or taxi (~¥80-100) needed to get to West Street. - Li River cruise: Departs from Guilin piers (Mopanshan for 3-star, Zhujiang for 4-star boats) in the morning (8:00-10:00), arrives in Yangshuo ~4-5 hours later. Luggage goes with you on the boat.
- Bamboo rafting (Yulong River): Departs from various piers depending on section. Book in advance in peak season.
- Electric scooter rental in Yangshuo (¥30-50/day): The best way to explore the countryside. NOTE: You need a Chinese driver’s license to legally ride; police occasionally check. Renting with a driver or using bicycles is safer for tourists.
- Bicycles available for rent (¥10-30/day); the countryside roads around Yangshuo are mostly flat and ideal for cycling.
Top Sights
Li River Cruise / 漓江游船
The classic 4-5 hour downstream cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo through the most famous karst scenery in China, including the view on the back of the 20 RMB note (Huangbu Reflection at Xingping). 3-star boats are cheaper and basic; 4-star boats are more comfortable with buffet lunch and better upper-deck access. Bring sun protection and rain gear for the top deck.
Yulong River Bamboo Rafting / 遇龙河竹筏漂流
Gentle bamboo-pole rafting on the smaller Yulong River (a Li River tributary), past peaceful karst peaks, villages, and farmland. More intimate and scenic than the Li River cruise. NOT white-water rafting — it is a gentle drift. Most popular section: Jinlongqiao to Jiuxian (~2 hours, downstream). 2 people per raft. You will get slightly wet (feet/legs). Life jackets provided.
Reed Flute Cave / 芦笛岩
An illuminated limestone show cave in Guilin city, known as the “State Guest Cave” for hosting foreign dignitaries. Good rainy-day option. ~90 RMB. Cool year-round (19-20C). Guided tour in groups.
Elephant Trunk Hill / 象鼻山
The symbol of Guilin — a karst hill resembling an elephant drinking from the river. Free to enter as of the last check (verify current policy; some Guilin parks have changed ticketing). Under an hour visit. The classic photo can also be taken from across the river.
Longji Rice Terraces / 龙脊梯田
Spectacular mountain rice terraces built by Zhuang and Yao ethnic minorities, ~2-2.5 hours by road from Guilin (~2.5-3 hours from Yangshuo). Best times: late May-early June (water-filled terraces) or late September-early October (golden rice). Day trip is possible but tiring; overnight recommended for sunrise/sunset. ¥80.
Impression Sanjie Liu / 印象刘三姐
Large-scale outdoor evening performance on the Li River directed by Zhang Yimou, with real karst peaks as the natural stage. 70 minutes. ¥238-680 depending on seat class. Cancelled in heavy rain. No English narration. Bring insect repellent.
Yangshuo countryside cycling / scooter rides
The Ten-Mile Gallery (十里画廊, ~5km scenic road), Moon Hill (月亮山, karst hill with natural arch), Yulong River valley, and village roads offer some of China’s best casual cycling through karst landscape. Mostly flat.
Classic Routes
2 days minimum
- Day 1: Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo (morning departure, 4-5hrs). Arrive in Yangshuo afternoon. Explore West Street and riverside in evening. Optional: Impression Sanjie Liu night show.
- Day 2: Yulong River bamboo rafting (morning, book ahead) → countryside cycling through Ten-Mile Gallery/Moon Hill in afternoon.
3 days
- Add Reed Flute Cave and Elephant Trunk Hill in Guilin (if you have time before/after cruise), OR Longji Rice Terraces day trip (adds 2.5hrs drive each way).
4-5 days
- More relaxed Yangshuo pace; add Longji Terraces (with overnight), more cycling, rock climbing (Yangshuo is China’s most famous climbing destination), or a cooking class.
Do NOT try to do Li River cruise, bamboo rafting, and Longji Terraces in one day.
Food to Try
- Guilin rice noodles (guilin mifen / 桂林米粉): The iconic local breakfast/lunch dish. Cheap (¥8-15), everywhere in Guilin and Yangshuo. Rice noodles in broth with braised beef, pickled beans, peanuts, and chili. Add your own condiments.
- Yangshuo beer fish (pijiu yu / 阳朔啤酒鱼): Yangshuo’s signature dish — freshwater fish from the Li River cooked in local beer, tomatoes, peppers, and spices. Try at restaurants along the river or in town.
- Lipu taro pork (lipu yukou / 荔浦芋扣肉): Taro and fatty pork steamed together with spices. A Guangxi specialty.
- Oil tea (youcha / 油茶): A savory tea preparation made by stir-frying tea leaves with oil, ginger, and garlic, then boiling and served with puffed rice, fried peanuts, and salt. An acquired taste. Traditional to Dong, Yao, and other ethnic groups.
- Stuffed Li River snails (niang tianluo / 酿田螺): River snails stuffed with pork and spices.
- Western food: Yangshuo has surprisingly good Western food (pizza, pasta, burgers) due to its long history as a backpacker and rock-climbing destination. Good for a break from Chinese food.
- Eat at busy places with Chinese patrons, not only at restaurants with picture menus out front on West Street.
Night Experience
- Impression Sanjie Liu: The main evening activity. 70-minute outdoor performance on the Li River starting around 19:30-20:50 (times vary seasonally). Book ahead in peak season.
- Yangshuo West Street: Touristy but lively at night. Bars, restaurants, souvenir shops, street vendors. Bar touts are common.
- Yangshuo bar scene: The town has a lively nightlife scene popular with both domestic and international tourists, from quiet pubs to louder clubs.
- Evening stroll along the Li River in Yangshuo: Peaceful walk along the riverfront with karst peak silhouettes.
Best Time to Visit
- Spring (April-May): Warm (20-28C), misty — the classic “Chinese ink painting” look with mist around peaks. Occasional rain.
- Autumn (September-October): Comfortable (22-30C), clearer skies, harvest season. Best overall weather.
- Summer (June-August): Hot (30-35C), heavy rain, flood risk. Li River cruises and bamboo rafts can be SUSPENDED during high water.
- Winter (December-February): Cool (8-15C), cruises less frequent, misty, fewer tourists. Not ideal but manageable.
- NOTE: Rain and mist create the classic hazy karst landscape look, but heavy rain closes water activities. Check weather before booking.
Culture & History
- Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region: Home to the Zhuang people, China’s largest ethnic minority (over 18 million). You will see Zhuang language signs alongside Chinese in some areas.
- Karst landscape: Limestone peaks eroded over millions of years by water, creating the dramatic tower karst formations that define the region. This landscape inspired Chinese shan shui (mountain-water) painting for over 1,500 years.
- Li River: The river and its scenery have been a subject of Chinese art and poetry for over 1,500 years. The 20 RMB banknote features the Li River at Xingping.
- Yangshuo transformation: A small fishing village until the 1980s, Yangshuo was “discovered” by backpackers following the publication of travel guides and the development of the Li River cruise. It is now one of China’s most famous small tourist towns with a well-developed traveler scene (cafes, climbing, biking).
- Longji Terraces: Built by Zhuang and Yao people over 650+ years, the terraces represent centuries of agricultural engineering on steep mountain slopes.
- Impression Sanjie Liu: Directed by Zhang Yimou (also directed the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony), this was one of China’s first large-scale landscape performances and pioneered the genre.
Accessibility & Tips
- Li River cruise: Boats have steps between decks; boarding requires stepping onto a gangplank. Not fully wheelchair accessible.
- Bamboo rafting: NOT accessible. Stepping on/off rafts required. Age/height/weight restrictions apply (check when booking).
- Reed Flute Cave: Paved paths with some steps; not fully wheelchair accessible.
- Elephant Trunk Hill: Park around the hill is accessible; climbing the hill requires stairs.
- Yangshuo countryside: Mostly flat roads good for cycling. Electric scooters are available but require a license.
- Longji Terraces: NOT accessible; steep mountain paths and stone steps.
- Fitness: Relaxed to moderate. Less strenuous than Zhangjiajie or the Great Wall. The most physical activity is cycling (optional) and walking on uneven stone paths.
- Bring mosquito repellent — countryside and river areas have mosquitoes, especially in summer and evening.
- Life jackets provided on all boats and rafts.
- Summer flooding is real: Check weather and water levels before booking water activities (cruises and rafting are suspended during high water).
Common mistakes
- Booking bamboo rafting without checking water levels — high water from rain causes suspension of rafting.
- Staying in Guilin instead of Yangshuo — Guilin is a transit hub; Yangshuo is the destination.
- Arriving at Yangshuo Station expecting to be in town — it is 30km away. Budget for a taxi or bus.
- Paying for the most expensive “5-star” Li River cruise — 3-star or 4-star is fine and significantly cheaper; the scenery is the same.
- Renting an electric scooter without a Chinese license — police occasionally check and can fine you. Rent with a driver or use bicycles.
- Tipping boat crew — not expected or customary in China.
- Buying “pearls” and “silver” from street vendors — typically fake or overpriced.
- Treating cormorant fishing photos as authentic daily life — the cormorant fishermen photos at Xingping are staged tourist performances (paid shoots), not fishermen going about their work.
- Attempting Longji as a quick half-day trip — it is 2.5+ hours each way by winding mountain roads.
