Quick answer

Most major Chinese attractions require advance real-name booking. Your foreign passport is a legally recognized valid ID. Do NOT assume on-site ticket windows always work as a fallback — for top-tier attractions like the Forbidden City and National Museum of China, there are NO walk-up tickets at all; they are online-only and sell out days in advance.

Universal booking principles

  1. Online real-name booking is now standard for all major paid attractions and free museums.
  2. Forbidden City and National Museum of China have NO on-site walk-up tickets. If they are sold out online, you cannot get in.
  3. On-site windows are NOT a guaranteed fallback for top attractions. For smaller attractions, arriving at opening time may work, but do not rely on this.
  4. Foreign passports are legally valid ID for visiting attractions in China. On-site windows accept passports for attractions that have on-site sales.
  5. WeChat mini-programs are the most common online booking channel, but may require a Chinese phone number and may not clearly support foreign passport input — this varies by attraction.

What to do if online booking fails

If the official mini-program or website will not accept your foreign passport number:

  1. Ask your hotel concierge to book on your behalf using your passport number. This is the most reliable backup.
  2. Try Trip.com (international version of CTrip) — it has an English interface and accepts passport bookings for many attractions. Small markup possible.
  3. Ask a Chinese-speaking friend or tour guide to book for you.
  4. For smaller attractions only: arrive at opening time for on-site purchase with passport.
  5. For Forbidden City or National Museum: if sold out online, you CANNOT get in. Reschedule.

Note on “unverified” entries: This means we could not independently verify from an official English-language source that foreign passport numbers are accepted in the online booking system. On-site purchase with passport is always an option where on-site sales exist, but may sell out. When marked “unverified,” the safe approach is to book via hotel concierge, Trip.com, or try the official channel and have a backup.

General rules

  • Monday closures: Most Chinese museums are closed on Mondays (except national holidays), including the Forbidden City, National Museum, Shaanxi History Museum, and many others.
  • ID always required: Even free attractions require valid ID (passport) for entry. Bring your original passport.
  • Timed entry: Most popular attractions use timed entry slots. Select the earliest time you can arrive.
  • Non-transferable: Tickets are real-name and cannot be transferred to another person — name must match passport.
  • Refund policies: Many tickets are non-refundable or have strict cancellation deadlines (usually 24 hours before entry).
