Day-by-day plan

Days 1-3
Beijing

Imperial China and the Great Wall

Use Beijing as the historic opener: Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven or hutongs, then one Great Wall day. Book the Forbidden City in advance (tickets released 7 days ahead); walk-up tickets are generally not available.

If you have fewer days

This is a 7-day route. If you have less time, cut one city rather than rushing through all of them. For a shorter trip, focus on Beijing + one other city (Xi'an for history, Shanghai for modern China).

Seasonal alternatives

In summer (Jun-Aug), start all outdoor sights early to avoid midday heat. In winter (Nov-Mar), Beijing and Xi'an are cold but less crowded; consider adding Harbin for the Ice Festival if traveling in January-February.

Route shape

Use this route when the traveler wants a classic first impression and does not have time to add nature or deep regional food stops.

Draft flow

  • Days 1-3: Beijing
  • Days 4-5: Xi’an
  • Days 6-7: Shanghai

Planning note

This route needs careful rail or flight timing. It should not add extra cities. If you have more time, consider the 10-day or 14-day routes which add a slower East China stop or Chengdu.

Nature extensions like Zhangjiajie or Guilin/Yangshuo require additional days and are not feasible within 7 days.

Practical reminders

  • Tipping is NOT customary in China.
  • Book the Forbidden City and National Museum in advance online (walk-up entry is generally not available; book when tickets are released 7 days ahead).
  • Hotels automatically register your stay with police.
  • Carry cash as backup for small stalls.
  • See the First China Trip guide for full pre-trip setup.
